Re: State Wrestling Tourny
Don't forget about Aaron Crabtree - he placed 8th.

I was matside last year for Coles' opener (his match was beside the young lady from Wytheville) and was impressed with his arm strength. He caught some breaks on. Fri. when both Regional champs in his half of the bracket lost the match before they would have met him, so he didn't have a #1 seed until the finals (it always surprises me how often a Regional champ loses their opener at state - we had 2 "A" & 5 "AA" #1 seeds lose their opener this year.)
Then I NEVER expected him to beat Ortiz after losing to him by Major at Regionals 2 straight years. But when you get 4,000 people cheering for you after an ESCAPE (which also put him just a takedown away from tying the match up), that HAS to give you a BIG ol' boost of adreneline. The only other time I've heard a state champion cheered like that was the last match in 2000, where the winner of the AA HWT match would give his team enough points to win the team title. Grundy's Albert Childress had his hands full (literally) with E.G. McDaniel. But our Freshman came through, delaying Christiansburg's first title for another year.
Re: State Wrestling Tourny
Congrats to all that placed
Especially Tanner and Big P

Re: State Wrestling Tourny
Tech recruit and the #1 wrestler in the nation, Cody Gardner, won his state title match...which normally wouldnt seem impressive considering he has yet to lose a match in high school or in AAU
what makes it impressive is that he pinned the guy and won in 11 seconds...
Re: State Wrestling Tourny
Pinning a kid with a seperated shoulder in :11 is NOT impressive -
winning a title after having shoulder "surgery" the night before the tourney is.
Re: State Wrestling Tourny
love the kid already...hopefully he can get up in the 275 range though, or he'll have to do some serious weight loss program to get down to the next weight
either way, kid is a NASTY wrestler
Re: State Wrestling Tourny
since my "edit time has expired", let me clarify.
I'm referring to Coty in the 1st line, but not the 2nd -
it was TA's Charlie Newman who was "healed" Thur. night.
